About the association

The Fitchburg and Worcester Railroad began service in 1850, starting in Fitchburg and running through Leominster and Sterling to connect the two cities to the Worcester and Nashua Railroad and points beyond. After many consolidations and bankruptcies in the railroad industry, the corridor came under the control of CSX Corp. The right-of-way between Leominster and Fitchburg, which parallels Route 12, was purchased by the cities in August 2017.

The Twin Cities Rail Trail Association was established in 2004 to transform the abandoned rail corridor into a trail for bikers, walkers, runners, commuters, and others to enjoy safely. That year, US Representative John Olver secured $4 million in federal funding to build the trail.

The association is led by a steering committee of 11 members, including representatives of the two mayors, as well as residents of Fitchburg, Leominster, and the surrounding area. The trail has enjoyed strong support from the mayors and city councils of both cities, the legislative delegation at the State House, the state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, the state Executive Office of Transportation, and the governor’s office.
